INTRODUCTION
Crude Palm Oil (CPO) is edible oil extracted from the fruit of palm trees. The palm tree is known to contain the high content of oil as compared to other commercial oil crops. The crude palm oil is purified and combined with other edible oils like coconut or kernel oil for use in the food manufacturing industry. The pulp of the palm tree fruit is red in color, therefore crude palm oil is also usually a faint red color. This happens due to a high vitamin A content in the fruit. Crude palm oil has a higher content of saturated fats and is not categorized as a healthy option for cooking oil.
PROPERTIES
Natural palm oil is trans free and cannot be genetically modified. But palm oil may be refined and separated into various fractions ranging from the high iodine content superolien to the low iodine content fraction stearin. Some varieties of crude palm oil also contain rare components like carotenoids and tocotrienols in minor quantities. These are fat soluble antioxidants which are highly valued in the field of medicine. Various researches around the world have reported chemo-preventive and chemo-therapeutic roles that tocotrienols could soon play in medicine.
PROCUREMENT
Crude palm oil is most commonly found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria and Columbia. It is extracted from the red pulp found in the fruit of the palm tree. It costs much lesser to extract crude palm oil than its counterparts such as coconut oil and sunflower oil.
USES
Crude palm oil is used widely around the world for cooking purposes. It is mixed with other edible oils such as coconut and kernel to use for both, home cooking and large scale food production. The low cost and high saturated fat content make it ideal for cooking on a large scale.
